Mundane Magical Objects

August 21, 2025
Category: Thoughtful Thursday
Welcome to the Thoughtful Thursday series, where I ask a thought-provoking question every week to inspire reflection and introspection. You can find more questions in this series by clicking here.

Today's Question:

What is one mundane object or tool that you use in your practice that might be strange to someone else?

I mentioned a mundane object I use in my craft a few years ago when I made this video, and it has only changed slightly -- I no longer have a French Press. Instead, I have a dual coffee pot with an espresso maker. The use is still the same even though the object is different.

The mundane objects in my practice wouldn't necessarily be strange to another witch, but the non-magical person would probably never know they were used in my magical practice. These include my coffee pot, my Happy Light, and my writing tools.

My coffee pot helps create a "magical bean juice" in the morning to help wake me up, but it has become a much-needed morning ritual in itself. While I may not chant over my cup every morning, the simple act of sitting in silence while I take the first sip is magical for me. It brings me into the present moment, and no matter what I have going on around me, it is always done with gratitude.

My Happy Light is a more recent addition to my magical toolbox. I've had it for about a year, but only recently did I incorporate magic into its use. If you're not sure what a Happy Light is, it's a light designed to imitate the sun. It is useful for those who suffer with Seasonal Affective Disorder, or in places where sunlight is hard to come by during the Winter. I recently created a sigil to add to my Happy Light to enhance the effects of the light, giving a boost to my focus and ability to study, learn, and retain information.

An open journal sits on a wooden desk with a circular lamp in the background. The journal details the simple process of creating a sigil for the Happy Light.

The last object I mentioned was my writing tools. These include pens, pencils, highlighters, and colored pencils. Honestly, anything I can write with can become a magical tool for me. Most of my spellwork, from planning to finalizing, is done by hand. I work much better when I physically write something down. It helps me retain the information, but it also brings me into the moment and keeps me centered.

I'm sure I have plenty other examples of mundane objects given a magical purpose, but I feel like these three would seem the most strange to an outsider.

Thoughtful Thursday is meant to be inspiring, thought-provoking, and reflective.
