Does liminality play a role in your practice?

Welcome to the Thoughtful Thursday series, where I ask a thought-provoking question every week to inspire reflection and introspection. You can find more questions in this series by clicking here.

Today's Question

How does liminality play a role in your practice?

Oh, liminality… the wonderful ‘tween places in my life and practice. I’ve long-embraced the liminality of my practice, often feeling squished between this place and another, whatever those places may be.

Liminality is a space that I have always existed in, even if I haven’t always been comfortable within it. When I think of liminality, and liminal spaces specifically, I’m thinking of places like the Otherworld or the astral. But I’m also thinking of places where two or more concepts or locations converge to create something new and ‘between’. Dawn or dusk, for example. These are liminal spaces between day and night. The beach is another liminal space, specifically the shoreline where the waves meet the sand. This is the transition space between sea and land. It is also the space where the three realms come together: land, sea, and sky.

Meditation and trance are also liminal spaces within my religious practice. These are moments when I am physically here, yet I am also spiritually elsewhere. I am aware of my physical surroundings, yet also aware of my Otherworldly surroundings.

Liminality is the space in which transformation happens. It is the moments in time when I am two or more things at once. It is also the space in which my magic happens, where communing with spirits happens, and where I learn the most about myself.

Being ‘between’ can be a strange experience, one where things don’t quite seem right, yet you know they are. It can also be unsettling, and it can make my impatience grow because I know I’m moving in a new direction, but the results aren’t quite visible.

Working with Brigid made me fairly comfortable in liminal spaces. She covers a lot of ground, and she has no issue with placing her followers on the proverbial anvil and forcing us into a space of discomfort and liminality. She knows better than anyone that liminality is where the most transformation happens.

This is a subject that’s hard to talk about, not because it’s something to shy away from, but because it’s difficult to explain to someone who hasn’t experienced liminality in a meaningful way for themselves.

I’m sure, over the course of my life, I will have more to say about the ‘tween spaces in my practice. For now, this is where my practice exists – ‘tween the Gods, the magic, and the world.

Thoughtful Thursday is meant to be inspiring, thought-provoking, and reflective.
