What is a Blue Moon? || My Blue Moon Correspondences

So what is a blue moon?

A blue moon is not actually a blue moon. The moon doesn’t turn blue — even though that would pretty neat for a blue moon — but there are two different definitions for the term “blue moon”. The older definition says that a blue moon refers to the third full moon in a season with four full moons. It has something to do with correcting the lunar cycle and making sure that when people were planting and growing their crops by the moon calendar, that seasons didn’t “come too early”.

The more common definition that we use today for a blue moon is just the second full moon in a month. Normally a calendar month only has one full moon, and when a second full moon appears it’s given the name blue moon. You can read more about those definitions at the Farmer’s Almanac.

A blue moon happens roughly every two to three years, it just depends, and this is actually the phrase “once in a blue moon comes from”. It’s not as rare as you might think because it does happen every couple of years, but this leaves it open to a bit more of a magickal kick.

What is the magickal significance of a blue moon?

Just like everything else in witchcraft, the magickal significance of the blue moon is not agreed upon. Some people don’t think it’s any different than the normal full moon. Others, myself included, believe that a blue moon has a different energy.

For me, the blue moon’s significance has a lot to do with…
  • second chances
  • long-term goals
  • power
  • luck

Working with a blue moon

I believe that any spell done during the blue moon will have an added kick of energy to it, but I wouldn’t cast spells during a blue moon that I want to work quickly. Since I associate the blue moon with long-term goals, I would use the time of a blue moon to cast long-term spells, spells that would be better cast and work better over a longer period of time. For me, these are going to be things like building and cultivating healthy relationships, growing financial abundance and prosperity, and kicking bad habits that you may have had for a really long time that you would benefit from kicking slowly.

If you’re the kind of person that decorates your altar for every full moon, consider adding different elements that bring in the blue moon energy to your altar for this particular full moon. For me, this would be things like blue-colored cloths, blue candles, any type of silver coin, and even water.

During a blue moon, you can also make some extra potent moon water and, if you don’t know how to do that, you can click here! Moon water made with the energy of the blue moon is going to have very different effects, in my opinion, than your regular moon water. This is because of the associations that I have with the blue moon and its energy in terms of long-term goals and second chances.

Many people also like to take a walk or just sit under the light of the full moon. This is a simple way to observe the lunar event, soak up the moon’s radiance, and meditate on the next few years to come.

Something else that you can do during a blue moon that I will probably be doing this year is to use the blue moon for those long-term goals in effect from one blue moon to another. These, as I said before, can be used to help build and cultivate healthy relationships and grow your financial abundance and prosperity, but I’m going to be using it for something a little different. I am probably going to give a much-needed boost to my health and wellness and use those as sort of a beginning point for this first blue moon, and then the next blue moon, use it as sort of a check-in. Where am I? What do I need to adjust? How is my magick working? And go from there.

So however you celebrate and honor a blue moon is basically up to you. As I said at the beginning, there’s really no consensus on the energetic or magickal significance of a blue moon. It’s going to vary widely based on your own personal practices or your tradition. These are just some of my own personal associates with the blue moon. So go forth and enjoy your blue moon celebrations and I will talk to you soon.
