How to Make a Poppet

Poppets have been used for many, many years for all kinds of magick. This particular poppet is going to a friend of mine for some anxiety relief, self-love, and compassion. Make your poppet out fabric, felt, or even paper. Use color and herb correspondences to your advantage by choosing the right fabric and thread colors for your intention. You can also stuff the poppet with herbs, sigils, and crystals. The sky’s the limit when it comes to making and using a poppet. How do you use your poppets? Let me know in the comments below!

To make a simple poppet, you will need fabric, thread, scissors, and something to stuff it with. The process is very simple and can be done with or without a sewing machine. The basic steps are written out for you here, but there’s also a video tutorial included below!

Step One

Decide on your fabric patterns and thread colors. Take advantage of any correspondences you hold and align them with the meaning and intent of your poppet.

Step Two

Create a template for the shape of your poppet. Most poppets are in the shape of a person. However, poppets can vary widely in their shape, so go with what feels right for you.

Step Three

Cut out two pieces of your fabric using your template. You will need one piece for the front and one for the back. Lay your fabric together, right sides facing. Then, use your thread and sew along the edges of your poppet. Leave a hole along a flat edge so you can easily turn your poppet right side out.

Step Four

Once your poppet has been sewn, leaving a hole, pull the poppet right side out.

Step Five

Stuff the poppet with your stuffing of choice.

Step Six

Sew the poppet completely closed.

Step Seven

Charge your poppet with the intention and let it know its purpose. Now your poppet is ready to use!
