The Death card is a card in the major arcana that scares a lot of people. Contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t mean what you think it means! Come find out what Death has to offer you.
Death – Description
The Death card is a card that scares a lot of people, probably just because it’s the Death card and because of the image that is traditionally depicted on it in the Rider-Waite deck. So, you can see here in the image it is a skeleton. He is wearing a black suit of armor and he is riding a white horse. He is carrying a banner with him that has a five-petaled flower on it, and there is what appears to be a dead royal in the background. You can tell that they’re some form of royalty because there is a crown laying on the ground in close proximity to their head. And then also in front of Death himself, there is what appears to be a Bishop of some sort and then a woman and a child. And depending on your perspective, the people in the card can either appear to be mourning the death of their royal or they could be pleading with Death to spare them. Then you can also see in the background there is a sun between two pillars and again, depending on your perspective, it could be a sunrise or sunset.
Death – Upright
Transformation – Change
In the upright position, the Death card really symbolizes transformation and change. It is not a card that when you pull it, it’s a sign that someone’s going to die or you’re going to die. That’s not what it means. It’s sort of a symbolic Death. It is a sign to you that something in your life is going to be changing. You might be going through a major transformation and change is coming. Now, most people see the Death card as a very negative card, but the truth of the matter is that when the Death card appears in your reading, it’s generally a pretty positive sign. Now I know that might be hard to see because it is called Death. It is a skeleton. But the Death card symbolizes a very large change coming to your life that is necessary. So honestly, it could be a change that you’re not ready for.
It could be a forced change and it might not appear to be a good change in the beginning, but the Death card is actually here to close one door and open another. The Death card is not here to stop you from moving forward. He’s here to change your perspective and maybe change your route a little bit, but not to stop you. When the Death card shows up in your reading in the upright position, it could also be a sign to you that you need to let go of the past, let go of the dead weight that’s holding you down so that you can move forward and continue with your transformation and personal growth. And then like I said, Death is here to close one door and open another. When the Death card shows up in your reading in the upright position, you might not be ready for the change. It might be a forced change, an unexpected change, or an unwelcome change, but the change is going to happen, nonetheless. And the Death card is basically saying you might as well just go along for the ride because he’s going to open some doors for you that were close to you previously.
Death – Reversed
Resistance – Inner Transformation
Now when the Death card shows up in your reading in the reversed position, it is about resistance and inner transformation. So, it’s kind of like the Hanged Man where you need to gain a new perspective, but the meaning surrounding it is a little different. So, when the Death card shows up in the reversed position for you, you are probably resisting a change and the change is close. So, it’s not something that is far off in the future. The change that’s coming that you’re resisting is very close to being a reality, and you are most likely resisting it because of fear. You are scared of what’s going to happen once the change occurs. The Death card in the reversed position can also show you that you need to be open to the possibilities around you. If you’re resisting change, you might be stuck in your routine and doing the same things over and over again and you’re not open to other possibilities.
Maybe you are someone that says no to new things and the Death card is here to tell you that you need to start saying yes. Change your perspective, change up your routine and allow other possibilities to come into your life. And you can’t do that unless you agree to it. And then finally, the Death card in the reversed position can show up in your reading and signify that you are going through a personal transformation. And it’s something that’s happening behind the scenes. So, this transformation is happening inside and it’s not something that others can see with your outward appearance. The Death card is here to tell you that you need to complete the transformation, go through and do what you need to do, but don’t tell others about this personal transformation because it is personal for a reason. And once the transformation is complete, then you can use your story to inspire those around you that might be struggling with some of the same issues that you were.
